Dental Implants

The gold standard for replacing missing teeth - permanent, natural-feeling roots.

What is it?

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. A custom porcelain crown is attached on top, giving the appearance and function of a natural tooth.

Why do you need it?

Missing teeth cause bone loss in the jaw, shifting of adjacent teeth, difficulty chewing, and changes in facial structure. Implants are the only replacement option that preserves bone, restores full biting force, and does not rely on adjacent teeth for support.

Who is it for?

Adults with one or more missing teeth, sufficient jawbone density, healthy gums, and no uncontrolled systemic conditions (e.g. unmanaged diabetes). Bone grafting can be performed first for patients with insufficient bone.

Treatment Procedure

  1. 1Comprehensive planning: CBCT (cone-beam CT) scan to assess bone volume and nerve locations.
  2. 2Surgical placement of the titanium implant under local anaesthesia or sedation.
  3. 3Healing period of 3-6 months (osseointegration - bone fuses with the implant).
  4. 4Placement of healing abutment to shape the surrounding gum tissue.
  5. 5Digital impressions and fabrication of the permanent crown.
  6. 6Final seating of the implant crown and occlusion check.

Aftercare

  • Take prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatories as directed.
  • Eat soft foods for 1-2 weeks after surgery; avoid the surgical site.
  • Do not smoke - smoking significantly reduces implant success rates.
  • Brush the implant crown like a natural tooth; use interdental brushes around the base.
  • Attend six-monthly check-ups for implant health monitoring.

Diagnosis

A CBCT scan, full-mouth X-rays, blood tests (if indicated), and medical history review are used to confirm sufficient bone, absence of infection, and suitability for surgery.

Prognosis

Dental implants have a 95-98% success rate over 10 years. With proper care they can last a lifetime. The crown on top typically lasts 15-20 years before replacement.
