Dentistry for Kids
Fun, fear-free dental care that sets children up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
What is it?
Paediatric dentistry covers all aspects of oral health for children from the eruption of the first tooth through adolescence. It includes preventive care, cavity treatment, orthodontic monitoring, and management of dental anxiety in a child-friendly environment.
Why do you need it?
Children's teeth are more vulnerable to decay than adult teeth and problems left untreated affect speech development, nutrition, self-esteem, and the alignment of permanent teeth. Early, positive dental experiences also shape a child's attitude toward oral health for life.
Who is it for?
All children from six months of age (or when the first tooth appears) through 17 years. Children with special healthcare needs, dental anxiety, or a high risk of decay benefit especially from a dedicated paediatric dentist.
Treatment Procedure
- 1Gentle welcome and child-friendly explanation of every instrument.
- 2Clinical examination of teeth, gums, bite, and jaw development.
- 3Appropriate X-rays (bitewings) to detect hidden decay.
- 4Professional cleaning, fluoride application, and dental sealants on back teeth.
- 5Treatment of cavities with tooth-coloured fillings using minimal drilling.
- 6Orthodontic assessment and referral if early intervention is indicated.
- 7Parent education on diet, brushing technique, and habit counselling (thumb sucking, dummy use).
Aftercare
- Help young children brush twice daily until they can do so independently (around age 7-8).
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals.
- Apply fluoride toothpaste: a rice-grain amount for children under 3, a pea-sized amount from age 3.
- Encourage wearing a mouthguard during contact sports.
- Schedule check-ups every six months.
Diagnosis
Visual examination, gentle probing, digital X-rays scaled to child-sized sensors, and parental history of the child's diet, habits, and any previous dental issues form the basis of assessment.
Prognosis
Children who receive regular dental care from an early age have significantly fewer cavities and orthodontic problems by adolescence. Early preventive treatment costs a fraction of the restorative work required when problems are allowed to progress.
