Mini Implants

Smaller implants for narrower spaces or denture stabilisation with less surgery.

What is it?

Mini dental implants (MDIs) are titanium implants with a diameter of less than 3 mm - roughly half the size of conventional implants. They are used where bone volume is limited or as a cost-effective solution to stabilise removable dentures.

Why do you need it?

Many patients cannot receive conventional implants because of inadequate bone width without bone grafting. Mini implants are placed without bone grafting in most cases, involve a minimally invasive procedure, and provide a faster, more affordable path to stable tooth replacement.

Who is it for?

Patients with narrow ridges or insufficient bone for standard implants, those who want to stabilise a loose lower denture, and patients seeking a less invasive, lower-cost alternative to full-size implants.

Treatment Procedure

  1. 1CBCT or digital X-ray to assess available bone width and density.
  2. 2Local anaesthesia administered.
  3. 3Mini implant screwed directly into the jawbone through a small pilot hole - no flap surgery in most cases.
  4. 4Ball-head abutment protruding above the gum is used to snap the denture in place, or a small crown is fitted directly.
  5. 5Immediate function possible in many cases.
  6. 6Review appointment at one week to check healing.

Aftercare

  • Eat only soft foods for the first few days.
  • Keep the area clean with a soft toothbrush and gentle mouth rinse.
  • Remove and clean denture daily if mini implants are used for denture stabilisation.
  • Avoid hard, crunchy foods that exert excessive lateral force.
  • Attend recall appointments every six months.

Diagnosis

X-rays and a clinical assessment of the ridge width and density determine whether mini implants are sufficient or whether conventional implants with bone grafting are the better long-term solution.

Prognosis

Mini implants have a success rate of approximately 90-95% over 5 years when used appropriately. They are particularly successful for stabilising lower dentures. They may require replacement earlier than full-size implants in high-load situations.
